Information about TURKU Turku is located in the south-west of the country and has a population of 175.000 inhabitants. Turku is the fifth biggest city of Finland, and used to be its capital until 1812, after which it became part of the kingdom of Sweden. When Finland fell to Russia, Helsinki became the new capital, and it has remained so ever since. The most notable historic building in Turku is the castle which was founded in 1280. The castle houses museum with many rooms decorated in the style of a specific decade or century. It was built on an island to guard the entrance to the river. Since the end of the last ice-age the Finnish land mass has been gradually rising. The castle’s island is now assimilated into the mainland and stands some distance from the river.Except from the castle, the Luostarinmaki Handicrafts Museum would also be worth seeing. It is an open-air museum where the professional skills and lifestyles of the pre-industrial age are kept alive by craftsfolk working in the original workshops. There are thirty such workshops including a silversmith, watchmaker and cigar shop. In the summer, artisans dress in period costume and musicians perform.Turku also has a Cathedral, which is the national shrine of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Finland. The museum ships anchored on the banks of the Aurajoki River in the city centre are also well worth a visit.
